This is a blog about the Bible. It is my firm belief that the Bible has been given to us in order that we can get to know God better and live in a way that brings glory to Him. In addition, I think that it is easy for us to be put off by the largeness of the Bible and wonder how we will ever begin to make sense of it all.
This blog is therefore intended to be straightforward to read! It is aimed at everyday people who are trying to make sense of God’s word and how it applies to their lives. When I write, I aim to simply write about things that I notice during my reading of a Bible passage and hope to stay faithful to the plain meaning of the text and to give some insight in order to help deepen your walk with God.
Therefore, my hope and prayer is that you will find these blog posts insightful and helpful and that you will be stirred to a greater appreciation and love of His Word. However, ultimately our study of the Bible is so that we can get to know Jesus better and better, and so I urge you to pursue Him above all else.
Why ‘The Sharpened Sword’?
The Bible is likened in Scripture to a sword (see for example Ephesians 6:17 (NASB)) and is part of the armour of God which we wear in order to ‘Be strong in the Lord’ (Eph 6:10). We must therefore take seriously growing in our knowledge and appreciation of the Bible. If we follow the analogy of a sword it is like sharpening a sword and preparing it for use. I hope that what I write will help to equip you in your walk with God and refine and develop your understanding of the Bible.
What will I write about?
The blog began with a series of posts about some of the more obscure characters that we encounter throughout the Bible. These characters do not feature prominently in terms of space but they are noticed, valued and important to God and many did amazing things in His service. I think that we can learn much from looking at these individuals, especially if we realise that what we do is important to God, even if we feel that we do not have an important or visible role to play. I hope that the lives and examples of these characters will resonate with each of us and stir us to pursue God.
A new feature for 2016 is ‘Snippets from the Psalms’ which is intended to provide some short insights taken from the Psalms with the aim of helping unpack this wonderful book as you spend time with God.
An advisory word before you start!
Please read these posts with your Bible open! I will begin each post by giving the passage of Scripture* that I will be writing about. You will hopefully find yourself so engrossed in what you are reading that you end up not reading this blog. That is fine! In fact, if you find yourself deciding between reading the blog or reading the Bible passage, always choose the Bible because His wisdom far outweighs mine!
*I will provide links to the passage on biblegateway.com and will use the New American Standard Bible (NASB). For ‘Snippets from the Psalms’ I will use the English Standard Version (ESV).
